Hi, I enjoy reading these forums so now I have a problem I thought I would ask you guys and get some advice. I have just bought 2 x 1GB modules of RAM to replace my 2 x 512MB modules, and I made sure I bought the same spec RAM as my original stuff and that my motherboard supports 2GB RAM, which it definitely does... probably not many computers that don't now anyway. I was getting all excited about putting the new memory in, as you do, but was a little disappointed to just receive a continuous series of short beeps without the computer booting up. I have done some checking and realise from many sources that this series of beeps means bad RAM or badly seated RAM. Of course, I have removed it and replaced it to make sure it is seated correctly and it definitely is. I have tried just one module, then swapping for the other module but still I just get the beeps. I honestly don't think that it is bad RAM, I just don't believe that. If I leave one new module in on it's own it just beeps, however, if I then add one of my old 512MB modules in the empty slot it boots up fine, so thats with one old 512MB module and one of the new 1GB modules. The system recognises both modules and the whole computer does appear to be running slightly faster with better performance whilst opening many different applications at once. I tried this again with one old module and the other new one and same results, computer recognises it and works perfectly. Why do you think that I cannot run the computer with both of the new modules in the system? - Why do you think that the system MUST have one of the old modules in to boot up and work? I thought the clue would be in slight differences with the RAM specs but they are the same all apart from the capacity. Please advise. Many thanks.
Apologies if this is a stupid / annoying question but where did you research what type of RAM you could use. Is the RAM speed you bought suitable according to your mobo book? You don't mention it in your post. Also what mobo are you using?
Hi, it's not a stupid question, I know I wasn't very specific. Firstly, I wouldn't say I researched in to the Memory specs, I do research alot of things on the internet but I didn't necessarily research into this. I used sisoft Sandra to recognise what memory I was currently using and what memory was compatible, then I physically took the memory out of the computer to look at the label. From both of these methods I deducted that I couold use up to 2GB of DDR2 PC2-4200/4300 533MHz DIMM RAM. - I belive all of this are the only requirements I need, however please do correct me wherever I look wrong because I am not 100% confident about all this now. I have been 9 years in an IT Support management role for my current electronics company and changed many types of memory, I have only experienced these kinds of POST beeps before but that was years ago when I was young and stupid and sticking all the incorrect types of Ram in different computers. - I have not had a problem since then, but starting to doubt myself a bit now, unless it is faulty. I don't have a mobo book by the way, I boght it as a return at PC world that only had a faulty hard drive and the specs were too good to pass up, 3.2GB P4 Processor, 1GB Ram, DVD-RW, etc.. all for £140, I thought that was quite good. The Mobo is a PC World own DIXONSEXP. Basically, from Sandra and the sticker on the current Ram I used the exact same spec for the new Ram but only larger capacity. - Is there something I have overlooked? Thanks.
Has the new ram got the same timings/voltage as your old? Has your mobo got specific brands that it accepts (like alot of 775/am2 boards now a days.)
RAM can be very weird at times i had bought 2X256mb ram (that is all my mobo would support) it would not boot up with both in at the same time i guess the os got shocked so try putting that second stick in now that you have got it booted on the other
