I have connected this a new USB-Ethernet adaptor to my laptop which is running w2000 and loaded the driver but I am unable to connect to the internet.
Network connections shows the device is working correctly.
If I replace the device with a wireless dongle then I can connect to the Internet so it is not a firewall or broadband problem.
My laptop only has one USB port so I am switching between wired and wireless Internet connection , the wireless works and the wired doesn't.
    Can you assist please ?

I would start out by checking to make sure the connection of where the Ethernet cable goes in is not damaged (ie: bent pins), make sure the ethernet cable is good by testing it on something else, make sure the port on the router or switch is good with another device. If none of that fixes the problem it might be a bad adapter or bad drivers. I would uninstall the drivers and try again. This can sometimes happen. If possible make sure the computer is getting an IP address when its connected to the Ethernet as that will tell you a lot about how far the connection is going. If the IP is 0.0.0.0 then there is no connection, if its 169.254.xxx.xxx then the DHCP is not working, either the service is not turned on on the laptop, or the router/switch needs a restart. Hope this helps! :D

Also, the firewall may have different rules for different network cards, so I would boot into safe mode with networking using F8 durring bootup. If it works there then its a firewall issue.

don;t worry it might be problem with ur cable, so you should check 1st your ethernet cable and router/modem port connector wheather its working or not. then you would check its getting ip address from command line utility ipconfig/all.

The Ethernet cable and broadband connection is fine , it works on another PC. The router and broadband are good they work with other PC. According to Device manager the USB adaptor is working OK and driver is OK.
The IP address is 169.254.xxx.xxx I have tried it on two different routers so PC is not getting DHCP. PC is set to get IP address automatically. How do I get PC to pick up DHCP ?

If he's getting an APIPA address he'll already be set up to use DHCP

    Check this out.

Seeing as you cant connect via hardline you'll have to get the necessary info the article mentions when you have a wireless connection. Just see if the static ip works. :)

EDIT: Have you tried a simple re-installation of the adapter? I know its obvious but I don't think its mentioned above
