My CD/DVD drive has stopped opening for no apparent reason. Eject disc in My Computer/DVD drive (Windows XP) doesn't work. I have tried booting up in Linux which I have installed on a second internal hard drive and it still doesn't open. It happened once before a year ago, and then suddenly opened when I pressed the drive button while booting up. It also stops opening sometimes if RealPlayer crashes - in this case I can always open it by rebooting. For these reasons I don't think it's a mechanical problem, although if course that's not impossible. The PC Support people want me to reinstall Windows but I don't see how that will help, if it's not opening in Linux.

Would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Andrew

I'm guessing you've tried pushing a paper clip into the manual eject hole on the front of your cd drive?

what type of cd drive is this? desktop or laptop? does it have a disk tray or does the disk slide in / out of it?

Thanks. I actually found out about the paperclip after I posted. Should have remembered to google before ringing technical support. Would have saved me a couple of days worrying about having to reinstall windows. The amazing thing was that I had a paperclip. They should supply one with the computer, with full instructions.

I think its more amazing that the tech support guys didn't know about the paper clip method.

    does it eject normally now?
