I just got a Dell Insprion 530 quad core desktop the other day, and after installing Sisoft Sandra, I was shocked to see that it's reporting my motherboard temperature is running between 81C and 86C.

That seems way way too hot  I thought I better try another monitoring program, so I gave PC Wizard a try, and it reported that my CPU temp was running at 81C

    Processor Temperature : 81 °C
    Processor Temperature (Core 1) : 30 °C
    Processor Temperature (Core 2) : 27 °C
    Processor Temperature (Core 3) : 26 °C
    Processor Temperature (Core 4) : 26 °C
    Mainboard Temperature : 33 °C

I'm confused about where the 81 °C temp is coming from. I would check it in the bios but Dell neglected to include any sort of hardware monitoring facilities in there. Grr !

The weird thing however, is that it's in the 80s right after booting up, or comming out of sleep mode... Or whenever its just running idle. Nothing seems overly warm to the touch, nor do I smell anything burning. In addition, the system appears to be running stable.

Any help or guidence would be most welcome.

    Welcome to HWF :)
The only important temperatures are the ones from the cores. The 81C that you see, means the maximum Tj. temperature. This one is not important. In fact, my Q6600 has a maximum tj of 100C, but the core temperatures are 40C, 36C, 30C, 33C. So as long as each core stays below the maximum Tj., it'll be fine :)
In other words, the maximum temperature that your CPU can handle is 81C. Your average temperature is 26-30C, so your far away from danger.

The red part below is important.

    Thanks for the reply, RHochstenbach.

I also have a TJMax of 100C under Core Temp, so I'm not sure that the 81C I'm seeing is that.

Also, when I click on the 81c under PC Wizard, it then says in the info window tmax 100c.

Strangely enough, I asked someone else who has this same model of computer and theirs reports the same 80ish C temperature.

So I'm just not sure what to make of it.

Could you please post a screenshot of the screen that shows that 80s temperature?

The 81C temp shows up as different things under different programs. I've included Sisoft Sandra, PC Wizard, and Everest.

Also, that temp bumps up a little depending on what I'm doing. The highest I've seen it so far is like 85C.

I think that there is a (malfunctioning) sensor on your mobo, and the programs like Sandra and Everest think that it's a CPU sensor. One part of a small chip can't be 50C higher than the other part.

If the temperature is at danger level, the system should shut itself off automatically.

Yeah, that's what everyone has told me so far... Still it's a little disconcerting to see a temp that high.

But the system seems quite stable, and nothing feels hot. And I would also think it would shut down if it were really that hot to avoid busting into flames.
