    Hi

I'm getting errors on my laptop when I run the windows memory diagnostic. It came installed with two 512MB DDR2 RAM sticks. I've tried each stick seperately in both slots and get fails on wmats+.

    Hope you can help.

    Hi there,

If your RAM is faulty then it will definitely have to be replaced but before spending any money (or requesting a replacement if its still under warranty) you should be sure that it is the RAM (and not something else in the laptop) that is faulty.

I would suggest you do the following
    1. download the latest ISO version of memtest86 this page (version 3.4a in zip format)
    2. burn the ISO (if you don't have the software to do this already, i would suggest CDBurnerXP)

I would suggest you test both your sticks of ram at the same time

    3. Reboot the laptop and boot from the cd you have just burned. memtest86 should start.
    4. let memtest run until it has passed at least once or until it reports any errors
    5. If memtest reports any errors, then repeat steps 3 and 4 but test the sticks individually.

If memtest reports both sticks to be faulty then see if you can find another laptop that you can put your ram into and repeat steps 3,4 and 5.

If you do all the the above with no errors, then your RAM's fine!

I have never used the windows memory diagnostic, so i don't know how good it is! and welcome to hardwareforums :)

    Thanks!

I'll give that a try. I'm afraid it's out of its warranty now and unfortunately I don't have access to another laptop to test the memory there.

Somebody else suggested that it might not be the memory but an old bios that is the problem. I've also read that it's risky flashing the bios.

    Cheers

    Hi

Just to let you know I updated my bios from version 2.00 to version 3.10A and then tried the memory test again and there are no errors and my laptop is running better. So that must've been the problem. I've also just ordered a memory upgrade to 4GB so I think it'll be running super fast after that!

    Cheers
