Hello I was reinstalling XP on my fathers laptop/notebook. Its realtively new, a HP Compaq nx9010. there was nothing wrong with it apart from being a very old and congested install of windows. Booted from cd (xp pro) and because i thought there was nothing wrong with the HD i chose the "quick format" option (the one that skips chkdsk) and installed windows fine. When installing programs i was getting wierd probelms like Office install saying that it didnt have access to a directory it created. Apon restart, during bootup, chkdsk was saying "file record segment xxxx is unreadable" and did a few other things. Basically there were major problems so i decided to reformat WITH CHKDSK and start again. Problem is that now XP install cannot complete a format at all. And to make things worse I tried Vista, and that comes up with an error code 0x80070570 and says "windows cannot install required files. the file may be corrupt or missing... etc etc " Me thinks the hard drive is shot am I correct? and is there anything I can do? update ---> i have run the Phoenix bios self test and the result says "#1- 07 fail" YAY!!! i know exactly what that means.... no seriously how must i know what that means? i dont see the point of error codes like that. can anyone who does actually know how to find out what that means please help me out here. thanks again Matt
Off-had no. I don't know if there's a way to clear CMOS on that unit or not. However, it may be more than just the hard drive, so you might look at cashing in that warranty.
