I'll get straight to it. For the past month I have encountered slow/jumpy speeds with my internet provider, Timewarner (Roadrunner). How jumpy are we talking? From the usual 7900kb/s to about 2mb to 4mb or even lower, and so on. I might get them for 3 days straight, be okay 1 day then get them the next day, then I'll be okay again, then hit 4 straight days and so on so on.

I enjoy playing online FPS shooters alot, one of them being Call of Duty 4. I play competitively in my spare time and a good internet connection/ping to the server plays a big role. It's been really frustrating to play with a spiking ping of 200 and over.

One fellow said I can't do much because I live too far from the gameserver -- not true. When my ISP is stable (which it was in a 3-4 week period) I maintain a good 90-100ms or even lower to Chicago gameservers compared to the 140+ I got when I have the jumpy speeds.

I called my ISP and setup a few appointment's here and there. At one point they came out and installed a new modem, nothing. Then they came out and ran a line from the box straight to my apartment, it stopped for a while, then came back. I'm on the phone with them as I am typing this trying to setup yet another appointment for them to come out here and fix what's broken (if something is broken).

In the meantime, is there anyone out there with such internet knowledge that may know what might be going wrong here?

oh and I forgot to add that I live in Southern California. Also, would it be wise to switch to Verizon DSL from my 7900kb/s Roadrunner connection? Would routing be different resulting in better ping/connection to gameservers or is that a no?

I would go to speakeasy.net ,and take a bunch of bandwidth test and keep a log of them, then if the problem still persist then change to something else...
