    Hi

I was looking at a interesting clip on tube by physicist Michio Kaku. He says there are many possible ways to achieve time travel by Einsteins Equations e.g Using a wormhole or enhancing the power of a black hole to punch through time. But what he said makes sense scientifically that is, but my question is can you go in the future???

and also one other problem i don't quite understand, lets say i was wearing my best suite and i accidentally dropped coffee on to it. I then go back in time to prevent my self from spilling coffee all over my self. But here is where i get confused, the second i thought about going back in time to prevent this from happening it would have never happened or another way is that it would be like a loop that would go on for ever.

Anyways here is the clips for you guys to watch:

i dont believe a loop would occur coz the last occurance (old you) your just having a cup of coffee and before you drink it you see yourself appear telling you not to spill any, it would only loop if you went back in time but didnt stop yourself from spilling the coffee, coz thats the only reason you went back.

    :)

Ok lets forget the loop hole theory for now, but the second i thought about going back in time to prevent this from happening it would have never happened so i wouldn't have spilled the coffee. hope that makes sense lol

BTW did you watch the clip???

You can travel to the future only. This is achieved by traveling faster than the speed of light. This happens because the time inside the object (for example a space shuttle) slows down, while the overall time keeps the same. So when you got a speed of 2 times the speed of light for an hour, it's 2 hours later when you get out. However, you can't go to the past because that period is already over.
But if you want to travel to the future (to about 2050) in let's say 24 hours, you need to travel with a speed of 15330 times the speed of light, and I don't think that a human could survive these massive speeds.

I disagree with you RHochstenbach, sorry :)

Because No one or no thing can go faster then the speed of light, it is impossible and it has been proven by Einstein and other great physicists. But what they say is basically you can cheat or get away around this problem either by using a wormhole or having enough energy to punch a whole through space and traveling in time, but the only thing that has infinite amount of energy is a black hole. We don't know much about a wormhole or a black hole other then a black hole just eats everything including light. Now what i believe is no one can travel to the future, it is impossible because it hasn't happened yet. but one of Einstein's colleagues said that if you were to travel around the Universe fast enough and get back to the position where you left of, you would have traveled back in time. Einstein tried to find a way to dismiss this theory but he couldn't and even now no physicist has proved that theory to be wrong, so time travel may be plausible.

You can travel to the future when going faster than the speed of light. But as you said, it's not possible to get that speed without 'cheating'.

When i saw the subject title it reminded me of Donnie Darko. All you need for time travel is a beat up delorean DMC-12 and some telephone cable, ive seen it on Back to the Future!!!

ok, my input[ot]hold tight, if you don't want to fall off[/ot]personally, i don't think time travel will ever be possible, because, if you use a motor as an example: a motor spins @, say 50 RPM, so, to travel backwards in time you would have to figure out how to make a motor spin @ -50 RPM, but the motor will still be spinning @ 50 RPM whichever direction it is going

Look time travel may be possible, just because we haven't fathomed a way to do it yet doesn't mean it can't be done. Many things in the past haven't been possible until technology catches up. 100 years ago they were probably debating wether it was at all possible to fly to the moon, or even fly at the speed of sound. Now these things are taken for granted.
And as my old man would say "anything is possible if you put your mind to it".

Incidentally ive also seen time travel watching 'Event Horizon' & 'Planet of the Apes' :D
If i think of anymore films i'll let you know.

True, but there were no laws of physics saying we could not do those things either. I'm not going to say time travel is impossible, I haven't read enough about it to say so myself but the problems with going to the moon was practical reasons, not theoretical ones which we can't do much about.

Btw, black holes don't have infinite energy. Nothing has infinite energy, eventualy black holes themselves are theorized to lose mass by Hawking radiation, although this is incredibly slow.

Ok i probably got that info wrong but i'm sure i heard something about black holes having something Infinite maybe gravity?????? i mean nothing can escape them including light, but anyways we are going down a different route. Lets get back to time travel, as Addis said time travel has not yet been proved wrong.

Now i have a question about wormhole, If there was a wormhole that would take me 1000 light years away and i entered this wormhole would it take me exactly 1000 light years to travel through the wormhole but when i reach the destination (or the exit). Time wouldn't have occurred, i would have appeared at the other end instantaneously as i entered the wormhole. But i really did travel 1000 light years, just time wouldn't have ticked over. (This brings up another question does Time exist????)

    Or

Would traveling through a wormhole be like the movies, you know very quick and there you are at the other end.

Hope that makes sense, because I'm getting confused my self lol

dunno, phisics is a very wide ranging subject.
as far as i can tell, the current theory doubts the fact that hawking radiation really exists, but, we'll see if Glast discovers any MBHs
that depends on the context of the question, because, we call it time, a more appropreate question would be: did our definition of time exist before the "big bang"
