Ive read that formating conventional hard disks is not enough to prevent people from accessing information on them. Special software is needed to completely wipe everything on the drive. Ive read that new solid state drives (SSD) have a number of advantages over convential types. Do they address the above issue as well? In otherwords, once you wipe a SSD is all the information on it permanently deleted also?
As far as i know one sweep over a SSD will prevent any data recovery. There are alot of conflicting stories about being able to recover data from zero'd HDD, but i believe it may be possible to some extent (but i doubt any commercial data recovery services would be able to do it). [OT] Zero'd = changing the value of every byte to zero (removing everything from the drive) [/OT] The reason formatting a HDD (or even a SSD) does not remove the data is when you format a drive you are only deleting the record of where the files are stored on the disk, you are not deleting the actual files. If you want to pernamently delete a single file, you need a shreader (i can suggest anything for a windows OS, through shred is nice and simple if your using Linux) If you want to pernamently delete _EVERYTHING_ on a drive then i would recommend DBan (you burn the iso file to a cd and then boot the computer from it). I doubt i have to warn you, but shredding files / or zero'ing / dban'ing a drive is pernament, there is absolutely NO chance that you (or anyone else) will be able to recover anything that it deleted... accidental or not.
