Hey guys, this is my first post here and im here to ask a question.

So i have a new rig and i brought my old DVD-DRIVE over to my new rig, when i try to boot from CD it says "BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" I set the first thing to boot in my BIOS as my CD Drive. Ive switched the IDE bands, and i know the Dvd drive works cause i used it in my old one and tested in a friends computer. Any ideas? This is also my first build.

    THANKS.

EDIT: Also i dont have very powerful PSU (Getting a new one tomorw) its a 230watt, plus i have a 8400 gs, 2 gb of ram and a 2.8ghz single intel proc.

is the CD / DVD detected by the BIOS ?

is the CD set as master, slave or C/SEL ?
that is a concern but it is not the thing that concerns me most, cos i have an intel 3Ghz single core & 1Gb DDR2 and 2 CD / DVDs and my setup uses over 200W & i have an Antec TP2 550

Edit: try this PSU calculator, it not very accurate but it gives you an idea of what power you need

detected HDD & CD should be detected before system POST, Power On Self Test (beep), and detected devices are usually displayed on screen as they are detected
assuming your CD is IDE, an IDE channel (a motherboard usually has 2 IDE channels & each channel can have only 2 devices connected too it
    • 1 is the master
    • 1 is the slave
master / slave is only to identify the device

to set the device as master or slave you move the jumper at the back of the device & set it to master, slave or C/SEL (cable select)

all cable select is: it's a way to identify devices, the master is connected furthest from the motherboard & the slave device is connected to the centre IDE connector

all this info is useless if you are using a SATA CD, but i've assumed it's IDE, am i correct ?

Well, since it will be almost impossible (for beginners) for you to detect whether your drive is detected in the BIOS during startup (BIOS screen loads pretty fast)... press the DELETE key to load the CMOS settings (this screen allows you to view your peripherals and configure additional settings).
Once inside, somewhere inside you will see selections like "Primary IDE Master", "Primary IDE Slave"... like this: CLICK HERE
Now... you should be able to see your DVD/CD Player in there somewhere. Lets move on to set your drive to Master:
Since your only going to have 1 DVD/CD drive, youll need to set the drive to MASTER. Behind your DVD drive there is a little white "jumper"... take it out and move it to the MASTER slot (do this if your drive is not on master)
Under your drive or on the top you will see the names "slave, master, csel" and it will map out for you where each goes in which slot

yeah, the jumper must be set to slave if the HDD is set to master to work on a single IDE channel / cable, otherwise only the HDD will work
maybe, get a spare jumper from somewhere like an old motherboard or something

So motherboard jumpers are the same as the dvd ones? cause i do have a old mother board. ill go see if that works and then ill be back.

also i dont have an IDE hard drive, its SATA, so the dvd-drive is master?

Yes, since your HDD is SATA you should set your DVD drive to Master.

    This is very odd.
    Lets try this:
Disconnect your SATA HDD and any other IDE OR SATA connections you may have. Then, were gonig to clear your CMOS... but before we do this... post a large picture (or provide a link) of your motherboard. I would like to see the connections it has and also would like to see if it has a "clear cmos" button.
So... post a picture if you can and we'll do as i said above.

traditionally, you are correct, however, there is no reason why a CD / DVD cannot be master or slave
before that try cable select as master / slave because the traditional master / slave can also not work, but is fixable by using cable select

set the CD as C/SEL and connect it to the end IDE connector for it to be the Cable SELect master or connect it to the middle IDE connector to be slave, failing that you need to try a known working DVD, also try it as master & slave on the secondary IDE channel if you have one

I cant even detect it in the bios.. I cleared my CMOS a couple of days ago and still nothing. im using PhoniexBIOS 6.0 or something. Do you guys have that?

Have you tried connecting the DVD rom to one of your friends computer or anyone else's?
And how did you reset your CMOS? Did you take the battery out?
