Hi i asked this question before but now that i know alittle more on the subject id like to ask again. I tried to put 1 gig of memory in my e-machine T3604. I added it to my already 512 that was in the PC. The 1 gig is the same speed and the same as the 512.(PC2-4200) It works fine for awhile then two things always happens. If i leave the PC on overnight in the morning it will still be on but the screen will be blank. Also sometimes in the morning the monitor will look like it shut off . The second thing that happens is while im doing something on the PC i will get a blue screen with all kinds of written stuff on it more or less a error screen. I then have to reboot but the PC will not reboot. It will only work fine again when i take out the 1 gig and just leave the 512. Do i need to do something to the bios maybe to get the 1 gig to work? And this might sound stupid but how do i get to the bios screen? Ive had PCs for many years but am now just learning about what makes them tick Thanks Mark
Sounds like one the sticks of memory is damaged, this would be due to the new stick that you've installed, or you may have accidentally damaged the other one while installing it if you haven't taken adequate anti-static precautions. To enter the BIOS, you usually have to press a key like Del, or F11. It should tell you when you PC boots up how to enter the BIOS, it may call it SETUP instead. I recommend download and burning [google]memtest86[/google] to a CD (it's an ISO file, so you must use an ISO burning tool like Nero instead of just dropping it onto a blank CD). Put the CD in and reboot, if your boot order is configured correctly it should boot from the CD and allow you to test your memory for errors. Leave it running for a few hours and check back to see the results.
