Hello all, have been trying to figure out this problem, doing alot of research but am getting annoyed so im reaching out for help. So here goes : I turn computer on, beeps once as it always has to signal its starting, dont read into that much, like i said and as im sure many of you know its just a normal beep. Then a constant streem of beeping ensues, the screen stays at the compaq screen saying the normal stuff like press f1 etc, i am unable to press anything, just beeps, a constant pulsating beep, it will do it with everything connected, or with everything disconnected. everything in this case meaning keyboard mouse network wires etc Computer is a Compaq Presario s5010nx Motherboard : P4G533-LA (Asus ASM58 Mozart 2 Bios) 2 sticks of 256MB Ram installed. On board video, no other video card installed. All fans spin and are clean. Allready tried : -RAM : removing, cleaning, changing positions and only 1 at a time -Removing sole PCI card installed in system -disconnecting IDE cables then turning on -removing CMOS battery to clear CMOS Things noted during those trials : if no ram is installed and turned on, 1 long beep repeating is given. if one or the other ram is in, same constant beeping ensues So can anyone help me out? Is the cpu dead? motherboard dead? any suggestions at all? thanks!
What was the last thing you did when your computer was fine? Had any viruses? Installed any recent hardware?
no recent hardware, everything was running fine, virus scanning always up to date, comp froze and problem began upon attempted restart
I've helped several people with similar situations. They all had Compaqs, and formatting was the only solution. I recommend you do that, install your O/S, and then recover any important data with a recovery program
umm ok but how do i get the reinstall started if i cant get the computer to start because of the beeping!
This is is what your gonna have to do. Insert your OS disk in your CD\DVD drive. Next, restart your computer and get into your CMOS setup (by pressing F1 or the DEL key). Once your in the setup, look for "boot priorities" settings. When you find it, there will about 3 items such as your HDD, CD\DVD drive, and floppy if you have. Set the FIRST priority as your CD\DVD drive. When your done, save, exit and your computer will restart. After the restart your disc will now load. There is a much easier way to do this if you fail the above but your gonna have to guess which F key to press. Its usually F8, or F9, or F2. Try those and then a little window will pop up asking you which device to boot from. Choose the CD\DVD drive and press enter. Hope this works it always has for me!
scorps, youve seemingly either forgotten or never figured out that i cant enter the cmos, i cant boot to a cd or my hard drive, it starts POST and then starts beeping like crazy at the screen where i would press f1 or del to enter the cmos settings, i am unable to press anything, it goes nowhere
Sorry i guess i misunderstood At this point i would just replace the Hard drive. If you have a spare around or a friends, plug it in your PC and see if it still happens.
have a couple of hard drives laying around and i tried them in the computer and the same error results. im guessing the motherboard is dead
