Recently my lap top optical drive started popping open. There is a disc in there, but it pretty much always has one in there. I was trying to think of what has recently changed on it, and I recently installed the latest AVG Free since support for 7.5 was stopping. I also clicked the install latest updates option when I shut it down recently as well. Are there any MS updates that could be causing this? I ran through the open processes on the PC and I didn't see anything out of bounds or that might be popping the drive open. It also seems to happen sporadically. When I take the disc out, it stops opening the door. Its strange, but it seems to access the disc for whatever reason and then eject it. Right now it has a DVD movie in there that has been there since I went to Vegas many months ago... and never ejected up until recently. Laptop is an older Averatec 6200 series.
Could be the anti-virus as you mentioned, disable the scanning of dvd/cd rom drive and see if it happens again.
There isn't very much in the way of config management with the AVG Free, but I'll dig into it a bit. For now I killed the program to see if that is the offender. Will report my findings... sometimes virus programs have "features" that are huge PITAs. Years ago a company I was with used McAfee and a new version update had a "feature" that deleted the e-mail data file for Outlook. Anyway, we will see.
