Hi everyone! I'm just asking for some little explanation for this: I'm planing to buy HD with 500GB/7200RPM/32MB buffer/SATA 3.0Gb/s. it'll be a master HD with winXP on it. At my PC I have some 160GB/7200RPM/8MB buffer/SATA 3.0Gb/s. this one will be a slave(the data HD). My question is about how will two HDs affect each other in these cases: a) master: has 7200RPM and slave: has 5400RPM? will the slave drive slow the master HD so they'll both work around 5400 RPM (I mean that the whole system will work at some average speed) or not? b) the same question is about buffer sizes, for example: master:16MB and slave:8MB. and for: c) bus type, when master will have SATA2 connection and the slave: SATA/IDE etc... Thanks in advance for your help. Sincerely.
There is no such thing as Master and Slave when it comes to SATA HD's. Master and Slave are configurations for PATA (IDE) connections ONLY. Even if both HD's were IDE it doesn't matter which would be Master or Slave, the speeds would remain the same. It would be smart however to make the larger gig (500), larger buffer size (32) Hard Drive your Windows HD since it would increase your system's performance. That goes for the SATA2 cable as well since it will give you a slight boost in performance.
