    Hi there,

I have a Gateway Profile 5 All-In One PC that was working fine then the screen went blank. Upon restarting all I could ever get was "Power Save Mode" on the display then it went blank. The computer appears to boot fine as I can hear it chunker away and I get the Windows start music.

Many forums recommended I clear the CMOS. I did that but still no joy. Now I cannot hear the PC boot as it probably needs the CMOS settings to be re-entered.

There is an external monitor socket, but without having the main screen active to select options I cannot activate it.

Can anybody give me any suggestions ?

    Thanks.

basically the monitor goes into "power save mode" because its not receiving any signals from the graphics card, which could be the culprit here, you can try a different vga/dvi cable, open the case and makes sure the graphics card is seated correctly.

have you tried connecting to different display device?

Quick update. There are two VGA ports on the back of the PC. One input and one output. They are identical and so easily confused.

If I hookup an external LCD monitor to the VGA output I can boot the PC, change BIOS settings etc. Only problem is when Windows boots, it is set to use the inbuilt screen as primary and so everything goes blank. The PC sounds like it boots fine, connects to my network etc. but I cannot see anything.

    Aha !!

By pressing F8 on bootup I can enter safe mode and see what's going on via the external monitor. The PC runs fine.

Given that the internal monitor displays "POWER SAVE MODE" and the external monitor runs fine, it looks to be either the connection to the internal monitor or perhaps the internal monitor itself. Given that I get video is fine on the external monitor may rule out the video card.

I'll unplug everything in the internal display chain and reconnect it to see if I can find anything flaky.

looks like the monitor or the cable might at fault here.
