I dropped my external hard drive badly while it was turned on so now if I plug it in it makes a funny sound and like its trying to start up. The LED doesn't even come on. I took the harddrive outta the case and was about to install it in my desktop comp but I found out my comp has a IDE motherboard and the external drive is SATA.

I can't afford to buy a controller at the moment. Is there any other way I can test to see if the harddrive works or not?

honestly it sounds like the hard drive is pretty much dead. if you want to test it on your motherboard you need a adaptor such as

IDE to SATA & SATA to IDE Bi-Directional Adapter.: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo
