i own an AMD Athlon 5000+, ASUS M2NP motherboard, 160 GB seagate HD (SATA). windows XP SP2

A week back, the PC suddenly started giving me problems... the system would "hang" after starting Windows. Then after restarting the PC, it gave me an error at boot up saying some dll in system32 folder of the windows is missing and i would have to repair it using the recovery console.

When i booted the PC with the XP bootable CD, it took a comparitively long time to 'load' the system files, required to start the installation process, then before the screen where the hard disk partitions are displayed, it showed me a Blue screen with an 'exception errror' message. This happened 3 times.

I have a CD which i got from the net called, UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) which includes all system tools required to do a hardware scan of the system, i tried this on the Harddisk, and at first it show me 1 bad sector, which it repaired. But the install process of windows XP still comes to the partition screen and gets stuck.

I tried the UBCD for the harddisk scan again, but this time it did not show me any bad sectors..

I run the Knoppix live CD, which doesn't give me any errors, and i can access the harddisk partitions without any problems.. from which i can conclude that the RAM has no problems.. the only problem is when trying to install XP..

    Help me out

what did you use to test the memory? ([google]memtest[/google]?) Sounds like a corrupt installation. Its also its not quite clear what stage your currently at, have you formatted the hard drive and now want to install windows again?
