i've wanted to record video from my computer while i play games just for fun. so i've tried things like FRAPS to try to record video but it slows down the computer so much. i have a really good computer, crysis runs with all settings maxed out and it runs around 45fps, but when i record with fraps that goes down to about 10fps. anyways, i recently got this old computer from a friend that has a 1Ghz processor and a 512mb RAM, so it's not exactly state of the art but it should be able to record video without any problems. so what i need is some way to get the video from my main desktop, to stream through the smaller computer which then relays it to my TV. another direction would be to send two signals from my main desktop, one to the tv and the other to the small computer. the last one i can think of would be to have the tv receive the video while at the same time the tv sends that signal to the smaller computer. the first or second method would probably work but i have no idea how to go about it. does anyone know of a program i could use to do this or a method to use to do it? if i could just get the video to go to the old computer i could use something like vlc or something to record the video being streamed. i don't want to spend a ton of money on it because i'm really just kind of screwing around with it for fun. also i wanted to do sort of a video review of a couple of games and upload them to youtube or something just for fun. so yeah, any ideas on how to go about doing something like this? if you have any ideas on how to record video without significantly reducing the frame rate that i haven't mentioned above, please tell me about it.
not sure which pc you're talking about, there's the main desktop that can run crysis with fully maxed out settings at 45fps and there's the one that can barely run windows xp. the little one doesn't have a video out cable but the main desktop does, but either way i don't want it to go to a dvd recorder because that would be a huge pain in the ass and i would end up wasting a ton of dvd's in the process. what i've recently found out is that there's this thing called a tv tuner card that pretty much acts like a dvd recorder in that it takes video from the tv, but instead of writing it to dvd it will broadcast that signal to the computer (which i could then just record with something like VLC or maybe software that comes with it). i'm still wondering if anyone has a free alternative to this but if not i don't really have much of a problem with spending twenty bucks or so on a tv tuner edit: if i can't figure anything else out i'm just going to install ubuntu on the small computer and get that tv tuner card. that way i'll be able to record whatever i want from the tv and it won't take away performance from the main desktop
I was referring to the PC which you are running the game on. As for the DVD recorder - I am really not sure what you are recording for but the point is that you could use rewritable disks (up to 2 hours per disk), but I can see that it would not be very convinient. The bottom line is - as far as I know, the only way to transfer real time video from one PC to another is to find a coresponding 'video in' on the recording PC. If a TV tuner card offer this than that is your option. However, if the recording PC can barely run XP, are you sure it is upto recording quality real time video?
i think it should be fine if i put ubuntu on it, i'll probably record in a lower resolution but that doesn't really matter, i think it can record fine. i've been trying to figure this out and it seems like the best thing to do would be to just get a tv tuner and plug it in.
