i recently switched from a geforce 7600GT to a radeon HD3850. my reason for the switch is the fact that i wanted a smooth playback of high def films. now my new radeon performs perfect for that job and the in-game performance has really improved also.

but, now here it comes! my performance in vista mainly the vista aero destop functions, has deteriorated so dramatically that it isn't funny anymore. i cant even scroll or watch a internet page with aero on.

i did some research myself and found out that aero now intirely runs on my CPU. and that was not the case with nvidia.

can anybody give me advice or help me?

    Welcome to HWF :)

Before you replaced your graphics card, did you completely remove the Nvidia software? If not, remove that. Then install the latest graphics driver from ATI. The card is listed in the Aero compatiblity list, so it's a driver issue.

i actually uninstalled the nvidia graphics card and that included the nvidia uninstaller. i am searching my windows directory for nvidia files as we speak. but since i followed the instructions given by ati and microsoft it is highly unlikely that it could have gone wrong.

and also. i have the latest drivers from ati currently running, for aero didnt work either with the drivers that came boxed with the card

[ot] Yet another ATI driver issue - do you think we should start keeping a tally of these vs Nvidia ^_^ [/ot]

I don't think you need aero running for smooth playback of media - it is just the frilly bits of vista.

i do get your point, but i bought this card for the fact that it has hardware accelerated playback of HD films. and also, this is the second time i'm having problems with ati cards. last ati switch i made resulted in a graphics card failure every reboot. but since this card is running HD and 3D game grafics so outstanding...

i must also note that video playback is going with about 2 frames per sec (apart from x264 video playback). if this goes on for about another 2 weeks i may consider to reinstal windows. but only as a last resort.
so please help me with this problem!

Can we get the rest of your computer specks too.

Have you checked your idle/load temperatures recently?
(Speedfan can do this - in sig)

I used to have a computer with the same CPU as you have. I switched from a Geforce 6600 to an ATI Radeon X700, and noticed that Aero was using more of the CPU than the graphics card. So apparently it doesn't really like cards from ATI. But it's weird that such a card has dramatic performance issues on Aero...

I'd have to agree even for ATI, maybe a faulty card - strange that it can handle games ok though, maybe get it RMA'd and get yourself over to good ol' reliable Nvida :)

This is the exact reason I don't even know the different ATI cards, too much trouble.

I agree. I personally prefer NVIDIA as well :)

But I think that it's caused by the poor drivers of ATI, because their cards work better than the ones from NVIDIA on Mac OS X.....

but the drivers coudnt be the real problem i think. i think that windows itself has a bug in aero when switching cards. only one way to find out and that is a reinstal of windows.

i should also note that i see allot of stable systems with ati cards. i am just not as lucky!

thanks for your help, i appreciate it!
