Can I transfer files from one computer to another just using an ethernet cable? Both computers have Windows XP.
half right, it's a crossover also each system must hav a NIC installed correctly BTW here is a brief difference between "straight though" (standard ethernet) & crossover that i did ages ago
Yeah you'll need a crossover cable. You can identify the type of cable by holding both ends of the cable next to each other. The order of the wires on one end should be different than the one on the other end. Connect the cable to both computers, and run the Home Networking Wizard on both computers. Alternatively you could enter a manual IP address at the network adapter of each computer. If you're going to do that, use the following settings: Computer 1: IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Computer 2: IP address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway and DNS should be left blank, as you're connecting the computers directly. It doesn't matter which computer is #1 and which is #2. We can guide you with each step if you need it
me neither, in fact i still only use a single nix box at home, although i do have a Vista box on my desk too, one day i may get around to networking them, because they are connected to the same router. thanks too RH i didn't think of that
