The thread "planned obsolescence" didn't quite
answer what I wanted to know so asking here.

Browsing for a new desktop computer I cannot find any XP which rather annoys
me as I do not wish to change to Vista and then I heard that Microsoft is not
supporting XP for very much longer so, if I do eventually manage to get one is
it going to be useless in about a year.

Does anybody know about this please or have I been mis-informed?

Once windows 7 comes out it mostly will be.

If your buying a PC from the stores your never going to find a PC that has XP. You have to build your own to get XP these days.

No it will not be useless...people are still using Win 98. Depending of course...on what you use your computer for. I will be just fine with my XP....I don't need them supporting it.

Thank you Darth - I expect I will have to do that if I cannot find
    anything in the stores.

Net Jockey - that's what I hoped - just want it for home use.

I shall just keep looking for a while.[IMG]

Yes, i also know some networks that use Windows 2000 as that was and might s till be considered the easiest and best Windows for networking tasks.

I can guarantee you that years after XP is discontinued by Microsoft you'll still be able to purchase it online from merchandisers.

don't worry about it they are ending support (free) for office 2k3 and XP home & pro next week (April 14) i too agree with the other posters

however if you want to pay MS for extended support you can get support until April 8 2014, but personally i think forums are better

I was wondering about security updates - would that be too much of a problem?

well, i think you'd be better off biting the bullet & get Vista or Win 7 (when it's released), although i personally use am happy about MS ending support for XP cos i use Debian & i'm using Lenny (latest) or you could do the sensible thing and abandon the MS ship and use Linux or one of the other free OS's just remember to stick with it, i started my Linux journey on Kubuntu Dapper 6.06 & i've never regreted moving to Linux

Thanks anyway Donkey - seems I shall have to make my mind up sometime soon.

yep me too, & i switched to Linux successfully
yeah, i.m not saying using Linux is easy, but, once setup properly it's much better & you don't need to worry about malware or viruses, not that Linux is immune from viruses, because it is theoreticaly resistant to viruses & for a virus to do any real damage it would need the user password, without that a virus would be limited to your personal files unless you have installed Wine also check out the Wine Bible

Security updates only apply if you use Microsoft products...The Correct third party programs update themselves.

In other words they take care of themselves.

Such difficult decisions - I will probably delay buying a
new computer. Maybe I will have to change to Vista after all :(
