    Hi,
I am looking at upgrading my motherboard but not my CPU yet. The CPU I have currently is a Pentium 4 640 Socket 775 3.2Ghz HT. I am looking at getting the ASUS P5QL-SE motherboard ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

My question is. Is this motherboard compatible with my CPU? It has other P4s shown on the compatibility list but I don't know if the list is complete.

Thanks for looking, hope you can help :D

PS. If anyone has this motherboard can you tell me if it is any good for overclocking? (vcore/clock adjustments, etc.)

Hi, no the motherboard doesn't support your cpu, I think because your's is Intel p4 640 which is a 90nm chip. It only supports the P4 chips above yours the P4-651, P4-662 and P4-670 I think they are all 65nm chips which the motherboard supports. The motherboard is only 45 and 65nm ready. Sorry to disapoint but you will have to select another motherboard.

    Hi,
Thanks for your help. I'm glad I asked. Can anyone recommend a motherboard (preferably ASUS) that is compatible with 90nm and 45nm (or whatever core2duo is). I don't know if they exist. I want to be able to overclock with full functionality. It also has to be CHEAP :D.
    Cheers

Asrock P45TS LGA 775 supports your cpu I just checked and doesn't require bios update. I own this board gotta say its not bad for the money, also supports upto 2000MHZ FSB, excellent for overclocking and also has the Vcore and Vdram voltage settings you wanted. Only real letdown it's not SLI or crossfire enabled as it only has one PCI-Express x16 slot 2.0 so it's bus speed is 4GB/s. Intel P45 chipset is really stable and runs extremely cool at 30C idle and 45C when in use gaming. You will have to adjust the FSB jumpers on the board to handle upto 2000MHZ. your chip currently runs at 800MHZ, I don't know how far you can push the P4's but possibly upto 1333mhz FSB?? but I wouldn't try it without seking more info.

Just buy a super cheap pentium dual-core e5200 and a good value asus motherboard.
Asrock motherboards are terrible: I used to have on and it was terribly unstable and problematic.

Just move to the future and leave your 90nm CPU behind. Also, Pentium 4's bottleneck your pc heaps, it was terrible, I noticed an extraordinary difference when I upgraded to a E2160 from a Pentium 4.

I've worked with an Asus P5Q-SE, essentially the P5QL-SE except P45 instead of P43. Pretty good motherboard. What graphics card do you have?

    Thanks for the advice.

I was planning on upgrading my CPU at a later stage. It looks like this won't be practical though.

I really need a motherboard that is good for overclocking as I have a great cooling set up for my case which is wasted running at stock settings.

I have an asus 9800GT 512mb graphics card which is amazing. My motherboard is my biggest bottleneck at the moment as I have 4gb of DDR2 800 RAM which I can't make the most of :(.

Forgot to say that I couldn't find anywhere in Adelaide Australia to get Asrock motherboards.
And I don't really need SLi as I don't plan on buying another graphics card anytime soon.

If anyone can recommend where to find Asrock boards or another suitable board it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Gigabyte is quite a well known brand havn't heard many problems with their motherboard. yes that board will work, supports your 90nm chip, no bios update needed. Decent O/C upto 1600mhz FSB, upto 1066mhz ddr2 which aint bad. excellent addition it has is dual bios, incase one fails you've got another backup. PCI-Express x16 slot doesn't state wether its 2.0 if it is, the bus speed will be upto 4GB/s. Also Intel chipset which I find to be very stable and run at low temps. Solid state caps all round but doesn't have mosfet voltage regulator heatsinks but isn't a big issue. So yea overall not bad, how much is it?

I can get the board for $104.

If anyone can comment on this boards' overclocking functionality/ability it would be greatly appreciated.

what are you aiming for with a new motherboard?
    Better Performance?

These motherboards overclock well but the Pentium 4's don't.

And yeah that motherboard looks suitable.

I am looking for better performance and good overclocking ability.

I plan on upgrading my CPU at a later date so it also needs to be compatible with new CPUs.
Not looking to spend heaps just want to keep my computer up to date as much as I can afford. :D
