I want to copy an IDE drive to a Sata drive and use the Sata drive as my primary drive. I have an Asus P5LD2 motherboard. I have Acronis Migrate Easy 7 software to do this. Will this do it with no problem? Do I need to install any drivers? Thanks.
I've used that program and it's amazing. No drivers are needed. Connect your SATA drive and boot up your PC. Load up Acronis Migrate Easy. Select disk clone. Then choose "manual". Now, select the drive you want to copy FROM (your IDE drive), then press next. Now, select the drive you want to copy the data TO (your SATA drive), then press next. Select "No, i do not want to delete partitions". I say you keep it that way just in case anything happens to your new drive. The decision is up to you though. Then, select "Keep data". Now, the important part: you'll have to select a moving method. Your options are: As is, Proportional, or Manual. DO NOT select "As is". Trust me, i tried that option the first time and had to do this whole process again because of this mistake. What you need to select is "Proportional". If your new SATA drive is larger than your old drive, then your old data including the exact size of the hard disk would be copied to the newer, larger drive, leaving you with unallocated space. This is what would happen if you selected "as is". For example, lets say your old drive is 120GB large and your new drive is 300GB large, selecting as is would move 120GB of space to your 300GB hard drive and leave you with 180GB of space you can't use! (technicially, you could if you set up another partition but thats another story...). So, after you select "proportional" select "Next" and then "Proceed" to commence the process. Give it an hour or two.
