ok guys this is my first time taking apart a computer and fixing it up. i don't know much computer lingo but would appreciate any help. i will have some questions and would like help. my first question is what is the difference in the capabilities of a CD Drive made in 2000 and one made in 2007, personally i don't think there is any based off the computers at my crappy high school have drives made in 2003 and 1999.

I'm not to sure what sort of information your asking for...

When it was made is less important that what is it, you can get some basic information from when the computer was assembled (ie if it was made it 1999 its not going to be a Blu-ray drive!) and some educted guesses (ie if it was made in the last 5 years it can probably read DVD's and is likely to be able to write to them too).

If you can be a little more specific about what you want to do to the computer perhaps we would be better able to help you (ie are you fixing it because it is broken, upgrading it to make it run faster etc).

Well i got a piece of junk computer and wanted to experiment and learn. currently it only has 28.6gb of memory, is running Windows Millennium. i would like to get it up to a quality gaming computer and have access to some good parts. in 2 weeks i will have myself a 180gb hard drive and a laser disk reader. i am out of luck on a moniter and i know thats probably the most important piece to a gaming comp. i found the answer to my question but my next one is i need to find out the MHz level of my computer. since it is millennium and i don't have an xp disk yet i was hopping for a program suggestion that might be free to download that will tell me.

Your not going to be able to upgrade that sort of machine to a "quality gaming computer" without replacing every single part, you might even need to replace the case to fit the new motherboard depending on what you have.

to find out what cpu your machine currently has just right click on my computer and click properties.
