I've recently managed to get hold of a free desktop PC DVD drive (someone had a broken PC they needed to bin) and I need to make it into an external DVD drive for my netbook. As far as I've understood I need a USB to IDE adapter to do that. The only problem is they tend to be at least £20, and I'm kind of stingy.

Therefore I'm wondering whether anyone knows of a more or less from-scratch way to do it - is it difficult or do I just need the right bits and pieces? Can anyone suggest a link where it's described in detail (my own google attempts have not been too successful)? I've read up on how USB and IDE stuff works but am still no expert in this.

One idea I got (based on what I did get out of google) is getting the IDE controller out of the motherboard of the PC - if that is sensible then I would just need an IDE-USB bridge for it. Any ideas on what I need in order to make one of those?

    Thanks in advance!
