Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I'm in dire need of help:

Here is the situation: early in June my (3,5 year old) laptop fan started having issues, where it made an unnatural sound. At the time I thought there was something stuck in te path of the fans, and since I was in the middle of end of year tests I was unwilling to open it up. Finally, in the beginning of Juli I was able to open it, but didn't find anything. The fan began to function worse and worse and eventually stopped working at all. I was unable to find an affordable replacement (the only sellers are in the states, with shipping minimum price is €200, at that price I might as well buy a new laptop). I opened it up again, removed the fan with the idea of switching it with a fan wheel from an older broken laptop, but they didn't fit. I still don't know how, but when I reassembled it, it worked perfectly, no noise, fan running at normal speed (I did need a system format because the hard drive was damaged during removal or something).

Now, the noise is back. And the fan speed is degrading at a massively faster rate. Listen . I've opened it up again, there is nothing I can see that's coming close to touching the fans (the heat sink is at least half a cm away from the blades). I have no idea how I solved it last time, and i'm at a loss for what to do. One idea I'm thinking of is removing the motherboard, plugging it in and looking with my own eyes at what is going on. the problem with that plan is this: I'd need to run it without:

    -screen
    -hard drive
    -modem
    -touchpad
    -keyboard
-several cables detached which may or may not be critical. From what I can see, they go to the speakers, microphone, a small switch that makes the system standby when closing the lid, and an Unknown cable (the left black cable here, not the one that goes to the modem ("main") but the other one)

I might even need to remove the RAM, but I hope not.

Is it possible to plug in the power and start it without any of the above, without having it blow up in my face and/or causing lasting damage to some part of the motherboard?

Or do you know what is the cause, and the solution?

    Thx in advance

If you have compressed air, you could try cleaning the fans out. Somethings they get all gummed up with dirt/dust....etc.

You could also try running speedfan to see the results!
