Just recently my pc just died. It won;t come on.

The power supply light is on. The motherboard has a light with some digits on which is on and showing some figures. However the on/off button is not doing anything. Averything else appears dead.

Is the on/off switch died or could there be a wider problem? How can I tell?

    Welcome to HWF :)
Try the following: open the case, and look for a pair of 2 wires coming from the power button (usually labeled "power SW"). Unplug it from your motherboard. Now short the 2 metal pins where the plug was connected with a screwdriver for no longer than 1-2 seconds. Does it turn on now?

I tried this and nothing happens.

What I have noticed is that when I plug power supply in, the mobo LED displays 0.0 and when I press the front power switch theLED displays 8.3 (which means ATX power ready according to manual). So this proves power switch is ok.

According to manual led display is this squence:

    8.1 start power sequence
    8.2 enable atx power supply
    8.3 atx power supply ready
    8.4 ddr voltage ready
8.5 setup pwm for cpu core voltage
8.6 assert pwm for cpu core voltage
    etc

Since it is not getting past 8.3 does it mean a power supply problem or that the power supply is ok but 8.4 is not taking place.

Do you have a spare Power Supply? If you can get access to another computer, you might be able to use that power supply for testing purposes.

golden rule. just start taking parts out and try diff hardware when the problem is solved just replace the part this is the easiest way to do this. this sounds like a bad psu going down and taking a board with it good luck to you

Just tried a spare power supply and it boots up. So looks like it was the POWER SUPPLy that was malfunctioning. Funny that the power supply did not completely die but was half broken.

    Thanks for the help everyone.
