Hello, I am currently running a PlatiniX 4X QDI Motherboard and I need to upgrage the memory and graphics card. I have 768mb of Ram and I have a Rage Fury Pro xpert 2000 pro graphics card. I know that I need sdram for my memory upgrade. I have two questions that I hope someone can answer. 1, I have been told that I have 184-pin memory, is this correct and if unsure how do i find out? 2, What sort of graphics card would anyone recommend, i want something with a bit of go but not really a gamer, just to help speed up my PC and to watch youtube etc.? Please can someone help? Thanks
Welcome to HWF According to the specifications, the motherboard uses RDRAM of the type PC-800 (184-pin). This so-called 'Rambus Memory' is very expensive. 512 MB of this costs around $200. The motherboard has an AGP 4x slot, so it can only accept AGP graphics cards. These are hard to get these days, so I'd suggest getting one from eBay. An ATI Radeon 9600 or Geforce 6 series would be okay for your needs. Because the AGP speed is limited to 4x (instead of 8x), you won't be able to get everything out of the card you're using. In other words, it'll do great for browsing the web but gaming will be out of the question.
I have spent most of the day looking for info on this motherboard and you have been the most helpful. Thank you, I think i'm going to re-build a new PC. Just by the by, Is RDRAM any good? Thanks again RHochstenbach
No it performs terrible for most computer users. It's only good when tons of data is streamed like with professional video editing. In all other cases, it's better to get DDR2 or DDR3 SDRAM
