To speed up my PC i use these programs:

    - CCleaner
    - MyDefrag
    - msconfig/services.msc

Before playing games I kill programs that eat up RAM and CPU time:

    - Browser
    - Torrent tracker
    - Daemontools
    and others.

If you've got a fast enough PC you should not really need to close programs like web browser and other small programs, the difference in game is not massive.

well, I guess the program closing is a habit left over from the single-core low mhz cpu ages...

Well... if you don't have a computer with at least minimum requirements.... you can try delete even windows... the game will not work.

A computer under the minimum system requirements for games will usually still work, in most cases at least. If you were to delete windows (which you couldn't do while you're running it) then nothing would work.

    ...which would be totally pointless.

Anyway, I keep my machines updated with patches, the occasional defrag, CCleaner, and driver updates as needed.

    Then, there's the overclocking thing...

This could come in handy if I was gaming on my netbook and I needed to free up every ouch of computing power as possible to run the game, but on my gaming rig, I have heavy applicatons like internet tv [to listen to audio] or itunes while I play games like GTAIV or cod4 etc, I have no issues with it what so ever.

My rig Q9400, HD4870, 4GB ... Not the most powerful gaming rig out there..
