Hi guys, I wonder if you could help? I'm trying to find out if I can get a new motherboard for my PC. My current one has an Intel Socket 775 and my processor is a Pentium 4 3.2GHZ. I don't mind at all if different new RAM is required because of the new board. I can work out for myself if the board I'm looking at has the right internal connections for all my drives etc. I just wondered if there was anything I was missing? Given that the install of new RAM isn't a problem, is all I need to know to get the right board that it must have an Intel Socket 775? I know that new boards that have the right Socket can work even if they have different chipsets to those on the original board. Thanks very much indeed, Dan.
Hi guys, I think I probably need to be a bit more specific about exactly what the problem is. The reason I want to know about what the requirements of a new motherboard for my PC are is that I have recently taken it to a shop for hardware repair and I had loads of problems with the shop itself. Many years ago, I was a support engineer myself and it seemed to become clearer that they'd messed quite a few things up with the machine, which I then ended up having to pay for. Every time I questioned what they'd done, they'd just give me a load of bull basically and refuse to take responsibility. They originally installed a new motherboard, HDD and PSU to resolve a power problem but, following the install of the new components, the PC kept crashing. After (much) taking the PC back to the shop again and again and being fobbed off each time, it was me who eventually discovered that the motherboard was the problem. They agreed to fit a new model, which they did and this resolved the problem. However, the new model doesn't contain an internal connection for a floppy disc. They were quite unapologetic about this and said that there were no other boards available that contained connections for floppy drives. Basically, I just wanted to find out if there were compatible boards that were easily available that contained connections for floppy drives which could have been used. I wanted to see if they were fobbing me again as this is my business PC. I'm keen to make sure I absolutely understand what the requirements of a new board for my machine are. I know an Intel Socket 775 is required, I would also need to keep the existing processor, however, a change of RAM would be okay. My PC is a Mesh and I've listed below firstly, the board the machine originally contained; secondly the board the shop first installed (which didn't work); and lastly the board put in the machine which resolved the problem but didn't contain a connection for a floppy drive.
