alright i reinstalled windows on my friends virus infested Dell Dimension 4600

he had all the original driver disks

we installed all the drivers but for some reason when you try to look for an internet connect there is absolutely nothing in the

    network and internet connections

His computer is directly plugged into a modem that doesn't require separate drivers because i can hook my computer into it and get internet

sorta weird never had anything like this happen to me before anyone have any suggestions ?

    Thanks :chk:

EDIT - operating system is XP

and we used a windows CD that came with the computer. it was odd to me though that it never asked us to enter any keys or now that its installed to activate windows
(does that seem odd to anyone else ?)

Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties". Once the System Properties window pops up, select the "Hardware" tab, then click "Device Manager". Once the device manager window pops up, check to see under "Network Adapters" that the right card is installed.

That's normal. XP installations that are distributed by Dell, HP, etc... have a pre-installed key so you don't have to insert it.

there is no network adapter under there

and the only thing that doesn't appear normal to me is a thing under other devices called ethernet controller with a yellow ? next to it

Yep, that's it right there. The yellow sign near "Ethernet Controller" indicates that you still need to install the drivers for it.

Go here and download the driver for it.
