Hi, Im running an acer aspire T180 and looking for a CPU upgrade. Board is MCP61SM-AM. Current CPU is AMD athlon 64x2 dual core processor 4200+ 2.20 GHz. CPU is showing as the weak link in the machine which is used as a home pc and online games machine. Ram is maxed, GPU is replaced, just like to speed stuff up a bit before commiting to fibre optic DSL. Thnx for any advice

    Hi,

It looks like your current processor is an AM2 socket type. I cant find documentation on the board as to where it supports any other socket type. Assuming you want to keep your current board, alot of the cpu's you may want to upgrade to seem to be sold out and the ones that are out there are really expensive. I found this 3.0ghz processor at amazon, Amazon.com: Processor - 1 x AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ / 3 GHz - Socket AM2 - L2 2 MB ( 2 x 1 MB ) - OEM: Electronicsnew is 200 dollars, used is 90 dollars. For that much money, you could probably get a newer processor/motherboard combo at newegg that performs just as well if not better for a similar price. You could try getting a used processor, but I would check to see if they will let you return it if it comes DOA. I just picked up this combo, works really nice and with my ddr2-800 ram, just need to buy a cpu fan if you get this as it does not come with one.Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!
