I'm running an ATI 5770, an Athlon II 2.8Ghz quad core CPU, and 4GB of RAM. Up until about 2 months ago, everything I played ran fine - specifically, LoL and Starcraft II. (NOT demanding games in the least, and other things like BFBC:2 ran great as well) At some point (not sure when or what I would have changed to caused this) I started getting slowdown - sporadic in LoL, constant down to 40 in crowded settings in SC2. Since then, I've taken all the steps normally associated with this sort of thing; nothing helped so I wiped the HD and re-installed Windows (Win 7) I'm on the latest service pack with all updates, have the latest GPU drivers, and furthermore just pressure-cleaned the case with an air compressor. I've been monitoring heat and my system stays at a constant ~24-27C while my CPU goes up to ~45C if I'm trying to push it. In any case, none of this has helped with my fps issues. What other steps can I take? I'm really hoping it's not a hardware issue. D: Thanks for any help!
Hi, Have you tried running Memtest86+ to see if any of your ram is giving errors? Also, try checking the temperature on your video card to see if maybe that is overheating (that can cause FPS hits too). You can also try playing with the side of the case of the computer off with a box fan blowing on it to see if that helps in case it is an air flow/overheating issue inside the computer case. I would also run a check disk on the hard drive just to rule out any bad sectors or clusters on the drive. If none of that solves it, it may also be a powersupply issue. If you have another powersupply in a different computer, maybe try that one just to rule that out as the problem as well.
It might also be an issue with your hard drive. Install DiskCheckup (free). Run it and select the S.M.A.R.T. tab to see if it gives you any red errors. Also, make sure your running in DMA mode and not PIO. Go here and follow the steps to verify that you're in DMA mode.
Thanks for the replies. I'm going to download memtest now and try that (64 bit Windows, so my understanding is that I have to burn it to CD) As for overheating, I don't think that's an issue because my system temp doesn't go beyond 27C and CPU temp 45C. I'm using SpeedFan for that, which also has SMART capabilities, and it says my HD is running at 90% efficiency. I also used BurnInTest which scans just about everything, including RAM, HD, and CPU - no errors found there. EDIT: Also, yes I am running in DMA mode.
