Will this DDR3 ram work in my old Core 2 Duo build?

    Ello everybody,

My ram definitely isn't what it used to be and seems to be causing a fair amount of problems, so it's time for a replacement/upgrade.

    I've got a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard with a 3ghz Core 2 Duo processor.

    I was wanting to install 2 x 4GB Corsair XMS3 1600mhz DDR 3 memory.

Now according to my motherboard specs, it supports.

Now obviously my motherboard supposedly supports only 4GB of DDR3 and a maximum of 1333mhz - however I've checked and apparently 8GB/1600 will not be a problem.

However, my concern lies in the fact that my motherboard says that it supports 1.5V memory - whereas the Corsair is 1.65V.

    Will this make a difference?

    Thanks for the time/help.

Well, if your motherboard allows for it (which I believe it does, but you may have to hit Control+F1 for all options to show), you can adjust the memory voltage in BIOS. This may not be necessary if you're not running the DDR3 at its top-rated speed. The Corsair stuff you're considering is aimed at enthusiasts, but if you run it at a slower speed, you might avoid the problem. If you can't boot for some reason, you can probably start off with your old DDR2, bump it up to 1.6V, save, and shut down the system befor swapping the new DDR3 back in.

You can also check Gigabyte's memory compatibility list on their website, but keep in mind that since it's an older board, they may not be testing new products. It should work, but if you want to check the list out to ease your mind, go for it.

I went for the 1333mhz memory as it required a lower voltage - working fine! Thanks for the help.
