When I turn on my desktop computer, my motherboard starts emitting a smoky smell. Upon further investigation, I noticed that a little black square (maybe an integrated circuit...is that the name?) on the motherboard near RAM slots is burning. By burning I mean that when I turn the computer on the black square has a slowly growing little circle of orange fire. At that point, I just shut the computer off.

    Is the motherboard dead?

Boy, that does not sound good.. Do not turn it back on, it sounds like you have a short somewhere.. I would either buy another motherboard or another computer. Most computers will smoke or catch fire from the Power supply, I have seen small amounts of smoke to flames .. Just be careful..
