Hello everyone. I own an HCL leaptop U39 and it is close to 3 years old. Since last couple of months it won't start without plugging it in. While plugged in, ubuntu detects empty battery but the lights indicate fully charged. Sometimes if i move the laptop even a couple of centimeters it suddenly turns off. Is it high time to replace both battery and the charger?

    Hi,

If you pull out the battery and then run it with just the AC adapter and it shuts off, then the AC adapter is most likely bad. Also, if the charger is bad it might not be charging the battery. To test the battery, just leave the laptop on without being plugged in and see if it shuts off within just a few minutes. If it does and the battery said it had a full charge, then most likely the battery is going bad as well. You might also want to take a look inside of the BIOS on the laptop to see if it will tell you the health of the battery. On Dell laptops, they have a battery health section which will tell you if the battery is failing or not, so it may be worth checking on yours to see if that brand has a similar feature. Another possibility could be damage to where the ac adapter plugs into the laptop, which is part of the system board usually. If the pin(s) in there are damaged, you may have to replace the main board to get it to function correctly. It is more likely though a problem with the battery or ac adapter though, so I would start by testing those first.

Without plugging it in, it wont start at all. The battery is completely drained. Removed the battery and plugged it in, moved it a bit and it turned off. I think the charging port loose or the charger is faulty. And i found no battery section in the BIOS in my system. Anyway, thanks for the help. I now have a clear idea of what problems i have to report at the service center.
