I own 2 Dell Q8200 computers, about 4 years old. Quad core, by definition, with 8 gb RAM. Both were running fine, usually 24/7 with intermittant breaks. Both ran Windows 7 64 and one was updated to run Win8 pro. Both have virtually identical hardware specifications.

One day I wake up and find one of them, the Windows 7 machine, off. It will not turn on at all. When the power cord is plugged in, the little green light next to the power supply goes on, but otherwise the computer is silent.

I mostly suspect the power supply, but being generally unwilling to deal with power supply issues, and the computer being relatively old, (I have the other Q8200 and an i7), and the data on the computer internal hard drive containing highly confidential information, I am reluctant to take it in for power supply replacement (and it might be something else, in any case.)

So what do I do? I could buy another shell of a computer, with cheap CPU and some RAM, a nothing video card or built in to the CPU, and then attach this hard drive, but then I run into Windows 7 validation headaches, no? The new computer won't run, because Windows 7 will think it's been pirated. The same would also be true, I think, if I substituted the hard drive of the broken machine into the Dell working machine.

What els can I do? I am looking primarily to save the data, so I could just attach the hard drive as a second drive to the windows 8 machine, and copy the data, but I would like to be running hte programs that are on the hard drive,

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

When the power switch is turned on, nothing happens. The only way for any change to occur is when inserting and removing the power cord, and then the little green light goes on and off.

You will need to change out the power supply With another Dell , Dell uses Proprietary parts so it has to be another Dell PSU...
