I did a clean install of Windows XP - now it won't start up and says that a hal.dll file is missing in the root folder. Any ideas?
Reinstall windows, or do a repair. Try a repair first, if a repair doesn't work then just do another clean install
I did about three clean installs and got the same answer - it doesn't help that I'm over my head in this However, I will try doing the repair and see what happens. Thanks
Tried repair, wouldn't work; tried a new install, for about the seventh time, wouldn't work; using information I got off the internet, I tried expanding the hal.dll file from the CD and installing it on C drive; said it was unable to expand the file. Anyone run into this problem before and come up with a solution?
Its probably that your XP cd has been scratched or damaged. Or it could be osme other hardware thats causing the file to be copied over incorrectly. I tried swapping cd drives when mine wouldn't copy a file correctly and that worked.
