Depends what systems you are running on both devices. You can take care of it very easily providing you are up to date on both and have an iTunes account. iCloud will do a great job for you. I do suggest you back up your contacts on your Mac before you start. There was a bit of a procedure for me because I was converting from a MobileMe account. It is automated but a bit confusing at first. In the end you will be very happy I’m sure.

Re: Transfer iPhone contacts to my iMac

You should just be able to connect the iPhone to the iMac via the USB cable. iTunes should detect the iPhone immediately, and start the sync. I use Windows on my computers, but I own an iPhone 4. My iPhone syncs right away via iTunes. It should be even easier with a Mac.

have you tried importing the contacts form the phone to google contacts then syncing then exporting them from there to a file on the computer then importing that into the address book
or you can also go through the info page in itunes for your phone and sync contacts from the phone to the computer that way by checking the box that says sync contact to then select address book
If you do not understand what I've just said, let us know How to transfer iPhone contacts to my iMac.

In Address Book on the new Mac, enter a contact (make up a dummy one). Then sync your iPhone. You will be prompted to merge/replace data - choose Merge. Same thing applies to calendars.

As you hopefully know, iTunes media content (music, videos, etc.) need to be transferred directly (i.e. not via the iPhone).

You can sync with iCloud and export contacts from iCloud.

Of course, you can't transfer sms or contacts to computer, just via the usb cable, because they won't be detected, you should use an iOS data transfer to transfer sms and contacts to computer.

    That is good!
For iPhone or ipad users, we often take a lot of pictures and videos, so when we want to backup or transfer these pics to pc, it can be a little bit complicated.

I think a data transfer or backup tool can help a lot
    copy iphone contacts to mac.

And other data such like text messages, contacts all can be backed up.
