K well to start off I have a compaq computer and a compaq motherboard... My computer is about 2 years old and i just recently bought some more memory. When i put the memory in i noticed that i only had 2 slots for memory, both of which were occupied by 256 cards. So i took one out and put in my new 512 memory. Tried to start the computer and it would turn on but it would not show anything on the screen. I put my old memory back into the slot and turned on the computer, and still nothing. I was wondering whats my best course of action to fix this problem.. whether its buying different ram or flashing my bios or w/e. (my new ram is kbyte or something
sounds like you just have the wrong speeds of ram. Put the new single ram into one slot, see if it boots. If you want to scavenge one of your old sticks, bring it in to where you got your new ram and get same speeds
Take out both sticks, and place in the 512. See if that boots up. Make sure it is seated correctly. If this doesn't boot up, put one stick of 256 back in to DIMM1, and ensure it is properly inserted. Try then. Then try the other stick in the same socket. Also note that if the board isn't comatible with whatever PC/DDR your new RAM is, it will not work. Also note that the RAM you bought should have the same number of pins, normally 144 or 184, I believe.
The RAM i bought should have the same number of pins as what?... And do you guys have any suggestions as to what RAM i should by for my compaq motherboard?..... Thanx for your help
its a custom built compaq... when i say custom built i told them what parts i wanted and they built it...
hmm...It's gonna be DDR. Get 184-pin DDR 512mb, and have someone help you match the speed of your old ram if you want it to work with your old sticks. What processor do you have?
try resseting the bios. do this by taking the side off your computer and look for a batery (on the motherboard) close to the battery there should be a jumper (a little pice of plastic connecting two pins) take of this jumper and put it on the next two pins along for around 5 seconds then put it back. do this after you have installed the ram you want to use (the 512 and 256 modules) then turn on your computer and it should work fine. post back the results. hope this helps Dave. P.S never do this while the computer is on!
well obviously im not on my computer but tomorrow i will test it... Thanx for all your help... one more question though: i have only 2 memory slots so it is ok if i have a 512 and a 256?
