perhaps instead of building a low end pc for being my theatre for movies..im gonna try and rip them instead to a dvd. i know that dvd is mpeg 2, and all my movies are layer 3...how do i go about converting them to layer 2 so i can rip them to a dvd? im sure there is some program that can tell u what codecs a file is using...any suggestions?

I'd try GSpot. It should be able to tell you the video and audio codec that is being used.
