So I've got a question, if this can be done:

I'm not trying to change the partition label, but the actual device name.
For example, under device properties the string
    "FUJITSU MHT 2030AT" appears
I want to change this -- can it be done?
I've got the Fujitsu drive listed above, and an IBM/Hitachi drive, and I want to do this to either one.

    Why, you ask?

I've got a Kenwood Music Keg in my car, which uses a Toshiba 10GB laptop hard drive which has the name "PhatNoise DMS 10GB" or something, and the Keg looks for this when the drive is inserted. I want to swap it out for a 40GB drive without paying $230 for a whole cartridge. I already partitioned and formatted the drive correctly, but I need to change this name string.

Can anyone help me? Am I screwed?
    TIA

    Tim

Only if you can change the firmware on the drive, and I really haven't seen any HDD company come out with a means to do that for consumers. It can be done, but I don't think the tools you need to do it are easily available.

Yeah, I'm having a helluva time trying to find something to allow me to do this... Frustrating! Oh well... I'm still taking advice.

Be careful as well when changing Firmware drivers, there is a possibility that if the firmware drivers have been written wrong you could seriously damage your drive.

You might want to just search your local free ads, or ask around for a quote for that hard drive..

Sadly, these drives only come in DMS cartridges (even the retail Toshiba laptop drives won't work) and nobody seems to want to part with them.
Can anyone tell me HOW to change the firmware, even though I understand the risk?
