Hi, The floppy disc drive on my PC has screwed up on me It started last week when I inserted a disk and it made an awful noise and failed to work. Everytime I start the machine now I get a message stating "Incorrect Drive A type - run Steup" I thought the disk drive was wrecked, so I bought and installed a new one. After some teething problems I've now managed to get rid of this error. However, a new problem is that when I look at the system hardware profile, it displays the drive as a generic NEC device (the old one). I tried to uninstall it and then let it pick up the new drive (a Sony product). However, this hasn't worked and the computer will still not read from the floppy disk drive. Any ideas as to how I can get around this problem? Thanks, FM
There were no drivers accompanied with it and I can only find one for Win ME on Driverguide.com. However, I found this on the web which suggests that no drivers are needed??? Works with all standard 1.44MB or 72OKB, 3.5" floppy diskettes Automatic Media Sensing - The drive automatically detects and selects for either 1.44MB or 72OKB mode. Fits to a standard 1" High 3.5" Wide drive bay - Mounts easily into almost any computer either desk-top or tower configurations. Installs with Just a Screw Driver - It can replace your existing floppy with just add a screwdriver. For use on a 5.25" drive bay, may require an optional mounting bracket kit. Low Power Consumption is specifically designed to operate in an energy efficient low power mode. Easy to Install! - No drivers needed, Just Plug & Play! Designed for IBM or 100% Compatible PC What can I do - I don't seem to be able to find a suitable driver on the 'net? Sorry, but I'm not totally offey with computer repair... I checked the Sony wesite and discovered that the type of this driver is Internal EIDE (ATAPI) Drive . Does anyone know what this means? Thanks, WW.
Windows has a generic floppy controller and floppy disk drive driver that works with any 3.5" floppy drive. Make sure the ribbon cable is installed correctly. There should be a #1 on the back of the drive (at least on most floppy drives). This is where you need to align the red (or other colored) stripe. If it's not numbered, the stripe should go opposite the power connector. Besides that, the BIOS should have the floppy disk controller enabled (duh, I know) and it should be set for a 1.44MB drive (duh, again).
The cables seem to be inserted correctly now and I have seen nothing untoward in the bios settings (from my limited knowledge). I have noticed that if i un-install the driver for the previous FDD (a NEC generic driver for what was an NEC FDD) that when I reboot the machine, the computer still picks up this driver for the drive. Why would it still be picking up this NEC generic driver. Could this be part of the problem? I would just scrap it and use USB storage devices, but this computer does not have USB ports, so my options are limited to only using the FDD. If there is any file or screen dump that could help you solve my problem please ask and I'll try to sort it. Regards, WW.
