Make sure you have the latest FirmWare for the DVD-RW, you can find this on Pioneer's website - or should be able to.

    It's basically a Hardware Driver.

If this doesnt work, try different Media than your using if that doesnt work RMA it.

What brand of burner is it? I know a few are fairly picky with media.

Apart from that usually if it won't do anything with a cd or dvd yet the other one works I've found it's usually the laser for that particular format is dead. So if it's still under warranty I'd take it in as soon as possible.

thanks for both the above replies. its a pioneer burner k13a. I spoke to toshiba and they want be to recover my hard drive. I dont want to do this unless absolutely necessary. Also note that i have copied and played cd's without any probelms until now and also tried different makes of blank media. Should I just get it checked under warranty first?

    Thanks

By all means, if it's under warranty, make use of it.

Do you think that toshiba will want me to recover the hard drive before they check the laptop out or would they be obliged to check it.

    many thanks
