I borrowed Half-Life 2 from a friend and installed it, uploaded steam and went to register like you have to. After I finally figured out that you only use the top set of characters out of the 2 rows on the key I hit enter and got this: "Installation of Half-Life 2 Retail Stardard is required before continuing.
Please insert your Half-Life 2 Retail Standard CD/DVD into the drive and select 'install' from the autorun menu."
Gah! I already installed it, and it took a mighty long time I might add. So what's the deal? Will it work or not. I've got my own account and I never saw "this account is already in use" or anything like that so for all practical purposes I think I should be okay. Anyone know what's up? Thanks.

Don't you know that you have to register unique cd keys with steam? Or else no playing hl2 for you. You have to get your friend's account info and password and download and play in offline mode so he can still play online

Thanks ninja, that's what I figured but it never said the key was already in use so I couldn't be certain. Better get the info from my bud then (*grrrr*).

I've heard though that there are some versions of HL2 you can download that DON'T require a Steam account to play, probably highly illegal and I have no idea how to find them, just something I heard from a friend of mine.

Wouldn't know much about Steam personally, the HL2 experience I had to endure was on another friend's computer, I stayed at his for the weekend and swore to myself that no matter how horrendous it was I would not sleep until I finished it. The result... well... can be said in a few words: I want my weekend back!

    [ot]Doom 3 was teh sux0r compared to HL2!! :D

Next gen graphics my ass, couldn't see anything and when you could it lagged like a bitch!

And they boasted extreme ai and physics...cuh!

Valve made us wait for HL2, but it was worth it in my view. Coming from someone who never played HL, but meh. [/ot]

Valve made us wait too long for HL2, I'm still waiting on the promised sequel to Opposing force, let's hear it for a 2010 release. :good:

Thanks WWR but unfortunately I'll have to wait it out and get the info from my friend (who should be, but isn't a member of this site). There's no way I'd download however many megabytes upon megabytes it would amount to. (with dial-up that would take only about, oh, two days maybe).

    lol try two weeks :p

At the rate of my old connection...jesus. 0.03Kb a sec if I was lucky. And I'm not joking.

It's only 17 quid to buy new on DVD from www.play.com. It's worth it!

Estimating the size of the game I'd say you were looking at a couple of gigabytes to download, possibly more. ;)

Christ I totally don't get this Steam thing. What happened to the good ole games where you installed and played. And if you wanted to play online you played online. Jeez....

Bring back the good old days where an internet connection WASN'T on the list of required system specs.

Ah! What the crap! I entered every possible variation of my friends info and every single time it said it was invalid. Now what am I supposed to do? I guess I'll just have to either buy the freakin' game or make sure that he didn't goof up when he gave me his account info.

I used bear share to download some "no_CD" or no steam patches as I think I deleted steam and returned his CD's but I've got the game installed. Unfortunatley the files don't appear to work, it ends up saying that they're not vaild Win32 application, any help would be appreciated, I'm sure there's a way around this.

    you cannot hack steam.

I'm sure it will be possible, but there are no patches that will let you play without steam.

Its as ingenius as it is infuriating.

Its worth buying just for CS:S - honest :) (or 1.6 is better, so as not to upset our uber fragging ninja)

There are versions of HL2 you can download that have been cracked to not require Steam or for you to be even online, only drawback is you have to install CS: Source, you don't have to play it but has to be installed. As per the rules, I will not divulge where it is avaliable, nor what company has done it, I am only saying it has been done.

Yeah, I wouldn't do that if I were you either, sorry to push the limets here, it is a file sharing site I used and my friend loaned me his CD's so I don't feel super guilty. Just the same, we all know how long it would take to download 4 gigs or whatever.

True it would take a while, but I wouldn't feel guilty, I'm glad that Valve won't get any share of my money, I don't like to support them. :p

    seen it done :)

Then I got a copy of it. Then felt guilty and deleted. It's a stand a lone executible that can be done through extensive geekings.

yeah, but unless he's an extreme lan-whore dialup won't serve all too kindly :(. I almost bought it for lans. Then thought, "BF1942 looks cool, gimme gimme"

I know someone who has around 10 HL2 accounts, may get one from him for kicks, just depends on upcoming lans.
