I just picked up this Netserver E60 mobo from a salvage place to make some use of my old P500 slot1 CPUs and I keep getting this "Invalid Serial Number" msg when I boot. Since it was a salvage, I don't have a valid number on hand. Does anyone know how to clear this msg or have a serial number I can enter to make it go away? The number doesn't have to be real as long as the Bios thinks it is. Thanks in advance!

The motherboard you refer to is a Compaq part (now HP), i have one of these as a backup domain controller at work using 2 500MHz Pentiums.

Your problem is that you cannot just install any old P500 CPUs they have to be P500 CPUs that have been manufactured for use in a Dual Processor motherboard. (Hence you are getting an Invalid Serial Number POST)

Unfortunately i do not think that there is any bios "modification" that will rid this, it would be possible obviously, however the likely hood that anyone has bothered to take the time to create a modified BIOS for your specific motherboard is HIGHLY unlikely.

Sorry, but the only way you will get this to work is to purchase CPUs that are intended for use in a Dual CPU motherboard such as the Compaq E60.

    ProcalX...Thanks for the reply.

I don't believe the msg I'm getting is from the mobo rejecting the CPUs. There is actually no serial number entered in the bios. The surplus place cleared it completely, as they should, when they pulled this mobo for re-sale. It lets me enter in a serial number that is supposed to be on the case, but alas...that is not possible. If you have an old serial number that has been decomissioned or thrown out altogether, I'd really appreciate it. If not, could you let me know what the pattern, (letter, letter, number, etc.) is so I can try randomly to make one up. The machiine is actually quite fast with the dual PIII500s I put in it. It's just the msg that's driving me up the wall!

    Thanks again for your help.
