i was innocent, looking over computer parts for my very much awaited sli pc im gettin in 2 weeks, and i was looking over cpus, athlon of course, when i noticed something disturbing, the 3800+ to the end of the FX line could only run upto 1600mhz while everything below ran up to 2000mhz, now im not an all time pc fanatic, but i think there is clearly a strength and win to the 64 side, but yet i have not much of a clue, please help me. id appreciate it :good:

The FX line features a larger L2 cache. The 1600MHz and 2000MHz: I think you're confusing that with the HTT links (Hyper Transport). The Athlon 64/FX's go up to 2.4GHz. However, the FX's are rather pricey, and while, yes, they are faster than the 64's, the price difference isn't enough to warrant such a hefty sum.

You can overclock most 64 bit chips to around 2.2, 2.4ghz on stock cooling, as I have with mine. Obviously it won't be as good as an FX, but you can save yourself some cash!

Buy a 3000+. clock it to the equivalent of a 3400, saving about 100 quid.

Well Athlon64 offers more bang for buck but FX are by definition faster. What you do is take an Athlon64 and OC it and you get high performance without the big bucks. Make sure you go with a socket 939 processor for sure though. That's the socket of the future. There are some Athlon64s that are socket 754, and you don't want those if you are buying new.

yea im gettin a socket 939 64 3800+ i think its worth most for the buck cuz then its a jump to the 4000 which does not have much improvement and this processor is pretty close to the FX-53 even tho obviously it is much faster. i mean for 366 compared to 700 sumthin its a good ratio huh?

i think its the time for me to change, im typin this out now on an old compaq presario 5000 with a 1 gig processor and i got doom3, hl2, and farcry sittin on the shelves cuz i can only play them on my dads computer who won't let me install more than one game i think its time for a lil upgrade.
