    Hi!

I bought a new computer about 5 months ago including these:
    CD-RW/DVD-RW Lite-On
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ s754
    Gigabyte K8VT800 Agp8x
Sonata Piano Black Midi ATX 380W
    Seagate 80GB ATA-100 7200rpm Barraguda
    1GB RAM
    GeForce 6600GT AGP

Now, the question I have for you is that how is the future looking for my hardware? Will I be able to upgrade my computer without buying basically everything new? I've heard alot of talk about PCIE and socket 939, but I also know AGP nor socket 757 are not dead just yet. I'm very happy with the performance in games etc, but how about in the future? Let's say, in 3 years. Will I be able to upgrade and if so, what parts? Thanks!!! :good:

Three years down the road is really pretty far. Socket 754, at best, will allow for a higher-speed Sempron, but AMD is pushing to eventually cut it off entirely. AGP 8x may very well not be supported at all, and if it is, don't expect anything but a budget card, unless you buy an older generation used card.

In all honesty, in three years, that system may very well not be worth the money to upgrade. Three years ago 1GHz CPU speeds were still respectable performance.

Even if you had the latest Socket 939 motherboard with SLI and a tricked out system, three years down the road, that system won't be anywhere near the top, and upgrades are likely to be harder to come by. The computer industry advances very rapidly, as we have such parts like video cards with a 6 month product cycle (give or take) and faster CPUs coming out.

SO basically you're saying that it doesn't matter what kind of computer I have, it'll get old sooner or later? Or are u speaking about my computer in specific? And do u think I made a bad choice when I bought this?

Any computer will get old. I just upgraded my main box, and I doubt I'll have all the same components in three years.

It's a fact of computers, almost all your equipment has already been bettered from the moment you buy it.

Sadly nothing computer related will hold up after three years except for timeless things like modems and hard drives (to a point), but ram, video cards, processors, optical drives (not as much of a difference than the others but frequently changing none-the-less), and motherboards. You can still upgrade your system easily, your motherboard will allow you to add up to a Athlon 3700+ which is a very nice chip and you'll notice it for sure. There will still be AGP 8x for a few more months I imagine and if nothing else the X850XT will make things sore for a long time to come.
But just the same, don't dig yourself into a hole buy upgrading things that wont carry over to more modern platforms, the cpu for example. A new motherboard and respectable cpu is a wiser choice than a faster, but outdated processor. You can get away with spending $160 on a SLI 'board and that will give you major insurance for the future right there. Hope this helps.

unless ur gonna be using it to jus surf the web, or do word, the computer will get outdated eventually, we're not jus pickin on you specifically. eventually in 3 years we'll have 64 bit multicore processors with SSE4 or 5 or MMX2 or 3, i bet the cell processor will also be multi core at 10ghz, and Intel wil be at 6-8ghz (with amd still kickin its a*s at 3 haha) hopefully by then intel will be bankrupt lol and we'll have windows longhorn VX2 (version 2) games in a year and a half at highest settings will only get 30fps from dual 6800 ULTRAS, it pretty much sux, but we ccan't stop it.

and maybe jus maybe, windows won't be an a*shole and will release apple compatible programs and products, like apple does for windows. ..... but i strongly doubt it'll change THAT drastically

    thats my prophecy

and I love you 2, if ur a guy, :swear: forget i said that

Well it has not been that long since I bought this, so I'll stick with this until I cant play games anymore. (I think that's in 1-2 years). After that I'll just go with the best. lol. Oh, btw! If I decide to change my motherboard to pcie and my processor to s939, which parts do I have to renew? Everything?

You'll need to upgrade your CPU and video card for sure, and you'll probably want to upgrade the ram eventually though a gig of most anything is great these days. Other than that everything should work as is.
