My father in law is having a problem with sending some attachments. Sometimes and only to certain people, his email attachments show up as .dat files. They leave his computer as other things like MS word files and jpgs and .bmp's. Its not a file size issue. Also, he is running windows xp with service pack 2 installed. Also he is using norton anti-virus and the windows pop up blocker stuff. Has anyone ever had this problem also? Please help!..

    Thanks,
    Chuck

you migt want to check this link out http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830302

also make sure outlook isn't sending emails as Rich Text. Because if you send an email in Rich Text format, outlook will combine any attachments into a file called "Winmail.dat". Only some email clients can read this file while others can't.

You can set another format as a default by going to Tools > Options > Mail Format
