    Hi,

I have an nvidia 6800 and my son has an ati x800se. My uses for the graphics card are photo manipulation and he mainly plays games with his. He has asked to swap cards. If i were to go ahead with this, for the purposes of processing of photos and basic manipulation, would i notice any significant differance in the performance of my computer? Thanks in advance

    OK,

Is the x800se a good enough card to manage all types of photo editing? (not graphics or CAD)

they are both high end cards, though not 7800s they still pack quite a punch, im sure it can be good for the photo processing and manipulation, but wait for some more critique from other members

they have performance around the same level, though I have to ask is that X800 a 256 or 128 mb card?

    its a 128mb,

it is just for photos though and whether the computer will display them on the screen as well... i mean, the computer has 2gb of ram and a p4 3.2 processor, so i'm starting to think that it would be ok no?

hmm the 128mb kinda tightens up the situation, i dont think that it will perform much different than the 6800 on photo editing muchly

    but still

wait for other critique "i give it an ok though"

You shouldn't notice any difference as photo editing isn't really doing anything much more than a windows XP desktop display wise. Pretty much you will be able to stick any video card in there and not notice any performance issues. Just screen clearity is the only factor. I think the cards are on the same level as video quality goes.

Because you have a nice processor and tons or ram (very useful in Photoshop) I'd say go for the switch. Since the 6800 has the same amount of ram you won't be huring either of you there. If your son enjoys Doom 3 for instance he'll see a speed increase, I have that card and it can handle anything I throw at it. The X800se has OpenGL 2.0 which is a little perk for some games but you won't notice it in photo manipultion. Good luck.
